How do I write to a prisoner?

If you are 18 or older, USPCG will provide you with the name and address of a US prisoner if you provide your age and also indicate the age range of prisoner you would like to contact, stating also if you have a preference for White, Afro-American or Hispanic ie Mexican, Puerto rican, Cuban etc.

In providing a name and address USPCG will also provide Writing Guidelines together with a USPCG Facts Sheet which outlines some FACTS of the conditions faced daily of those incarcerated in US prisons. Contact us now if you would like to write to a prisoner.

I feel nervous about writing a prisoner, what should I do?

We suggest you only tell what you want them to know. Prisoners are just like people on the streets. There are some good and some bad. ALWAYS use common sense! You also need to read and understand our disclaimer before contacting us and writing to a prisoner!

Can a prisoner get e-mail?

Sorry, no. Most prisoners do not have computers or computer access.

How many prisoners can I write to?

There is no limit! But only ask for more if you are prepared to write.

Can prisoners get stamps, gifts, etc?

Each prison has its own rules that are constantly changing. It is best to ask your pen pal directly or ask us direct. USPCG can provide you with stamps or US Post Office Money Orders at cost. Rules are strict on this so please contact us before sending anything!

My letter to a prisoner was returned to me. What now?

The address we provided is what the prisoner has given us. We update the address when the prisoner writes and tell us about an address change. If they don't write to us with their new address we have no way of knowing it.

How can I help USPCG?

There are many ways we can use your help. The most important way is to write to a prisoner! That is why we are here and it is not possible without your help. You can also ask a friend if he will write on a regular basis to a prisoner. Donations are always acceptable be it in the form of postage stamps or cash/cheque donations.
